Florists in the Making

Once we chose our venue, flowers dropped to the bottom of our priority list—the place really speaks for itself, and we knew that any flowers we used would be more of an accent and less of the main focal point. That being said, we felt that we could take some creative liberty and start to look at out-of-the-box, cost-effective flower options. Because, holy guacamole, wedding flowers are expensive.

Our first thought was an online flower company. We looked at FiftyFlowers, and I was this close to pulling the trigger on the sweet flower box below. We knew we wanted purples, and I love the combination of these flowers. I held off, though, and I’m glad we did.

A few months later, one of my coworkers who used to live in Eugene (about 45 minutes away from Vida) mentioned that she used to go to a U-pick flower place at the base of Mt. Pisgah. My interest was definitely piqued. I found the place, called Sparhawk Farms, and sent them an email asking about their U-pick program.

I got a quick response back,Rounding Out the Wedding Party, and started to get really excited about the idea. The owners sent me a list of flowers that would (barring any extenuating circumstances) be available in June. Their program is as follows: You buy a ring for $4 and stuff as many dang flowers as you can in that ring. They noted that each ring is about equal to one centerpiece or bouquet. They have staff on hand to help, and have wedding-flower helpers who will make the bouquets for you for what is still a really reasonable fee. However, after I passed the idea by my bridesmaids and my mama, we realized that we all really wanted to pick our own flowers and craft our own bouquets.

The plan is to spend some time on Thursday or Friday picking flowers (we will discuss with the owners of Sparhawk what our timeline should look like in order to keep the flowers pretty once we get a little closer to the big day!), and then we’ll lug them all back to McKenzie River Inn and get our creative boots on! My ladies are so excited to get to craft their own bouquets, and I think it’ll be such a fun and memorable project. We’ll be getting enough flowers to also do centerpieces, though I haven’t quite decided how we’ll pull that one off.

If you’ll recall, I’m really digging the look of assorted vases at varying levels/sizes/etc., which could get complicated with our flower idea as it stands. The plan so far is to fill lots of rings with bunches of all one flower (for example, one ring filled with scabiosa, two with baby’s breath, two with lavender, one with peonies, etc.) and just let my decorating people have at it with the flower arranging on the day of the wedding. We love the non-uniform, wildflower look, and I’m thinking this approach might actually help us better achieve this look. One thing is for certain: Mr. O and I are clear that flowers still aren’t making the cut for frenzy-worthiness, so our worst case scenario (which would be, well, ugly bouquets and centerpieces) doesn’t really bother us. We’ll just let our venue do the talking if that happens. Of course, we’re really hoping they all come together beautifully, though! OK, picture time.
